Analogue CCTV was the standard for 20 years. IP cameras changed everything — higher resolution, remote access, intelligent analytics, and easy scalability. Here's what you actually get with a modern IP system.

The State of Analogue CCTV

Analogue CCTV systems dominated commercial security for two decades. They work by transmitting a continuous video signal over coaxial cable to a Digital Video Recorder (DVR), which compresses and stores the footage. They are reliable, well-understood, and — importantly — still widely installed across Ghanaian businesses.

The core limitation of analogue CCTV is resolution. Standard analogue cameras capture at 720×480 pixels (D1 resolution) or, in the HD-over-coax variants, up to 1080p. While 1080p sounds reasonable, it is fixed — you cannot zoom into recorded footage and retain useful detail. A 1080p analogue camera covering a 10-metre wide car park entrance will produce footage where a face at 5 metres is recognisable, but a face at 8 metres is a blur. The licence plate of a vehicle at 8 metres may not be readable at all.

What IP CCTV Actually Is

IP (Internet Protocol) CCTV cameras are network-connected cameras that digitise the video signal inside the camera itself and transmit it as digital data over your network infrastructure — the same Cat6 or fiber network your computers use. They are managed by a Network Video Recorder (NVR) rather than a DVR.

Because the video is processed digitally inside the camera, IP cameras can achieve resolutions that analogue systems cannot match: 4MP (2560×1440), 8MP/4K (3840×2160), and even higher. A 4K IP camera covering the same 10-metre car park entrance will capture a face at 8 metres with usable detail and a licence plate at the entrance clearly and legibly — even from a wide-angle lens covering a large area.

Resolution: The Practical Difference

Resolution is not just a specification number — it directly determines what you can do with recorded footage after an incident. This matters enormously for the core purpose of CCTV: providing usable evidence.

A 2MP analogue camera may capture that something happened. A 4K IP camera captures who did it and what they were wearing. In a bank, this difference determines whether footage can be used to identify a suspect. In a warehouse, it determines whether you can read the serial number on a stolen item. In a car park, it determines whether you can identify the vehicle involved in an incident.

Beyond resolution, IP cameras also offer Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) — the ability to capture clear images in high-contrast lighting conditions, such as an entrance where the interior is dark and the exterior is bright. This is a significant practical advantage in Ghana's high-contrast sunlight environment.

Remote Access and Monitoring

Because IP cameras transmit data over your network, and your network is connected to the internet, remote monitoring becomes straightforward. Your NVR connects to the internet, and you access live and recorded footage from anywhere in the world through a secure app or web interface.

For a business owner, this means you can check your premises from your phone at any time — whether you are in a meeting, travelling, or at home. For a security team managing multiple sites, a single monitoring console can display live feeds from all locations simultaneously. For an insurance or loss prevention team, remote access to footage after an incident can be achieved in minutes rather than requiring a physical visit to collect a recording.

Analogue systems can be retrofitted with remote access capabilities, but the implementation is less clean, less reliable, and less secure than native IP remote access.

Video Analytics: Where IP Really Pulls Ahead

Modern IP cameras and NVR systems support intelligent video analytics that transform CCTV from a passive recording system into an active security tool. Standard analytics features available in mid-range IP systems include: motion detection with configurable sensitivity zones; line crossing detection (alert when someone crosses a virtual boundary); intrusion detection (alert when someone enters a defined area); face detection; and vehicle detection and licence plate recognition.

These features enable genuine proactive security rather than reactive evidence review. Instead of watching hours of footage after an incident, your system alerts you in real time when something happens. An intrusion into a server room at 2 AM triggers an immediate notification. A vehicle entering a restricted zone raises an alert at the gatehouse. These capabilities are simply not available in standard analogue systems.

Scalability and Future-Proofing

Expanding an analogue CCTV system means running new coaxial cable to every new camera location and potentially replacing the DVR if you exceed its channel count. Expanding an IP system means connecting a new camera to the nearest network switch — the same infrastructure you use for computers and phones — and adding a camera licence on the NVR software.

In a modern building with structured cabling in place, adding an IP camera to a new location can be done in under an hour. The same exercise on an analogue system can take a full day of cable routing.

IP systems also benefit from firmware updates — your cameras can gain new features, security patches, and analytics improvements over time without hardware replacement. Your analogue DVR, by contrast, is static from the day it is installed.

The Verdict: When to Choose IP

The honest answer is that for any new installation, or any meaningful upgrade, IP CCTV is the right choice in almost every scenario. The resolution advantage alone justifies it for any application where footage quality matters — which is most business applications.

The only scenario where analogue makes sense is if you are adding a small number of cameras to an existing analogue infrastructure and the cost of replacing the cabling and DVR outweighs the benefits of the upgrade. In that case, HD-over-coax (AHD or TVI) cameras can provide 1080p or even 4MP resolution over existing coaxial cable — a useful transitional solution.
